Description
The Torah establishes the covenant. The Writings and the Prophets show what happened when Israel began living within it.
A Discipleship Journey Through the Writings and the Prophets follows Israel from the entrance into the land through the judges, kings, divided kingdom, prophetic warnings, exile, return, and continuing expectation of restoration.
Readers encounter Joshua and the conquest, the repeated cycles of Judges, the rise of Samuel, Saul, David, and Solomon, the establishment of the Temple, and the division of the kingdom into Israel and Judah. They see the consequences of covenant faithfulness and covenant failure unfold across generations.
The prophets enter that history as covenant voices calling Yahweh’s people back to what He had already revealed. They confront idolatry, injustice, corruption, and divided loyalty while announcing judgment, exile, restoration, and hope. Through them the expectation of the coming Messiah becomes clearer: the Son of David, the Servant, the Shepherd, the King, the One through whom Yahweh will restore His people.
The Psalms and wisdom writings reveal another dimension of covenant life. They teach Yahweh’s people how to worship, lament, seek wisdom, remember, repent, endure suffering, and hope. Together with the prophets, they preserve Israel’s memory and continually point beyond present circumstances toward what Yahweh has promised.
By the end of this journey, Israel has returned from exile, but the greater restoration remains incomplete. The promises of a renewed heart, the New Covenant, the restored kingdom, and the coming Messiah remain before them.
The stage is set. The next movement of the story begins when the promised Messiah enters it.
